On September 22nd the D’Addario Foundation will host “Music Makes You,” a fundraising event in support of music education designed to bring music programs and product support to underserved children, nationally and globally.
The event is being held at Brooklyn’s BRIC Arts and Media Space with guitarist/songwriter/producer Blake Mills serving as the evening’s bandleader and performances by Karen O & Nick Zinner (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Lucius, Smokey Hormel, Kaki King, Marc Ribot and other special guests.
100 percent of donations from “Music Make You” will go directly to the Foundation’s partner programs, courtesy of D’Addario & Company, who cover all of the administrative costs for the foundation to ensure that thousands of children have access to the transformative impact that music can have on education and well-being.
While there is growing evidence that studying music enables children to overcome social, emotional, and cognitive barriers, there remains limited access to affordable, quality music instruction and the arts are often marginalized in the public education system in favor of tested subjects like reading and math. Forty percent of high schools in the U.S. do not require coursework in music or arts to graduate, 55 percent don’t have a certified music teacher and 58 percent of schools lack the resources to implement a music program.
