Eastman School of Music Launches Volume II of ‘The Eastman Case Studies’

Mike Lawson • News • February 15, 2017

Developed at the Eastman School of Music’s Paul R. Judy Center for Applied Research, “The Eastman Case Studies” are designed for current and future leaders to develop the skills and perspectives for helping solve problems of musical arts organizations through situation analysis, recommendations, and discussion.

Volume II explores specific business challenges of five leading arts institutions in North America: New World Symphony, National Sawdust, Texas Music Educators Association, San Francisco Girls Chorus, and The Industry, an experimental opera company based in Los Angeles. The first volume of case studies was released in July 2016.

Case studies have been a primary teaching tool for business schools for more than a century. MBA students read case studies – narratives that describe a problem in a specific business and how it was (or was not) solved – to develop practical experience and strategies in real-world business situations through analytical and reflective practice.
Music schools have implemented programs to help music students develop knowledge and skills in the areas of leadership, management, and business, but often lack high quality study materials to support them. Available with teacher notes and teaching instructions, The Eastman Case Studies bring the same types of resources to music schools that have been available to business schools for decades. They are edited by Michael Alan Anderson, associate professor of musicology at Eastman, and produced as an initiative of Eastman’s Paul R. Judy Center for Applied Research.
The Eastman Case Studies add to Eastman’s programs that develop and support the leaders in the musical arts world of the 21st Century, including the Eastman Leadership Conference, Eastman Career and Leadership Certificate: Online, and the Institute for Music Leadership.
