Influential Indian sitar musician Ravi Shankar died this week at the age of 92. Shankar came to prominence in the West after he collaborated with the Beatles on hits like “Norwegian Wood” and “Within You, Without You.” George Harrison referred to him as “The Godfather of World Music.”  Shankar’s career spanned nearly 80 years, performing at great venues throughout the world and seeing his compositions performed by groups like the London Philharmonic. He went on to work with musicians and composers as diverse as Philip Glass, John Coltrane, and flutist Jean-Pierre Rampa. Shankar was also the father of pop singer Norah Jones.
