High School theater and music teacher Everett Jeremy Rodriguez recently earned his school $10,000 through the Great American Teach-Off. Rodriguez, who teaches at Liberty High School in southeastern West Virginia, won the award after being named one of 20 finalists in the nationwide Great American Teach-Off for grades 7-12. Thanks to the community, the students and a teacher who truly goes above and beyond, Liberty High School’s music department is now $10,000 richer.

The contest was decided over an open public vote throughout the spring. The band has reportedly doubled in size during Rodriguez’s tenure at the school. With the grant, Rodriguez says that he plans to invest in a computerized piano lab utilizing Finale software, with the goal in mind of allowing students to freely explore music composition and notation. The $10,000 grant was provided by GOOD and University of Phoenix.
