The Portland Cello Project has brought together a collective of local cellists to begin stretching the expectations of those classic instruments. The group is on a US tour to promote their new album, Homage, which was released this past Tuesday. Formed six years ago, the crew of 10-20 rotating members includes members from all types of backgrounds, from hip-hop to jazz, folk, and indie rock. Their repertoire is made up of songs like Kanye West’s “All of the Lights,” Jay-Z and West’s collaborative “H.A.M” and Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop.”

“Homage” mixes tracks from West, Talib Kweli, and Outkast with the work of contemporary classical composers.
