Alan Parsons Announces 2018 Season of Master Class Training Sessions

Mike Lawson • News • February 26, 2018

Alan Parsons has announced that his educational enterprise ASSR (Art and Science Of Sound Recording) will open its 2018 season of Master Class Training Sessions at Orange Country’s Hybrid Studios the weekend of March 24 and 25.

Session greats Vinnie Colaiuta and Nathan East head the all-star lineup of musicians for the initial tracking session.

In addition to observing and learning about the mechanics and musical challenges such as sync, phase, balance, processing and levels in large format sessions, attendees will be part of history in the making; the track being recorded at this unique learning experience will appear on a brand-new Alan Parsons album scheduled for a year-end release.

The tracking session on day one will feature the pre-eminent rhythm section of Vinnie Colaiuta and Nathan East.

The piece being recorded is an orchestral classic, being given a prog-rock treatment by Grammy-Award-winning arranger Tom Brooks, who will also play keyboards on a tracking session rounded out by the Jeff Kollman of Chad Smith’s Bombastic Meatbats, Asia, and Glen Hughes fame. At the end of day one, Brooks and Alan Parsons will talk through Brooks’ MIDI orchestral arrangement and discuss how the new piece was created.

On day two, a full symphony orchestra will be recorded in Hybrid’s main live studio. Different orchestral miking techniques will be shown and discussed, with attendees being allowed plenty of time for Q&A on specifics in the morning session before the orchestra arrives.

Like all Alan Parsons master classes, “Orchestral Maneuvers” is a fully hands-on, participation-encouraged event where attendees will rub shoulders with Alan and the musicians over an entire weekend, coming away with a fully immersive learning experience.
