Broder Selected as Inaugural Eastman/ArtistShare New Artist

Mike Lawson • News • May 1, 2017

The University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and ArtistShare have announced that Owen Broder, Eastman alumnus and saxophonist/clarinetist/composer, has been selected as the first Eastman/ArtistShare new artist.

Through the exclusive partnership of Eastman and ArtistShare, Border will release three projects, the first of which is titled Heritage: American Roots Project. All the projects are designed to recognize and support the careers and development of exceptional Eastman students and alumni.

Broder’s American Roots Project combines American roots music and jazz in a full-length album named Heritage, which includes original and re-imagined works by artists like Bill Holman, Jim McNeely, Ryan Truesdell, Miho Mazama, and Broder himself.  The eight new compositions on the album are inspired by the heritage of traditional American folk music in its various forms (bluegrass, gospel, blues, and others).

Broder’s résumé in jazz ranges from performing in his own award-winning jazz quintet Cowboys and Frenchmen, to performing with artists like Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project. Broder has degrees from both Eastman and the Manhattan School of Music.
