DSO Makes ‘Replay’ Video Archive Free

Mike Lawson • News • March 18, 2020

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) has announced that it will make access to DSO Replay — the on-demand video streaming archive of past DSO performances — free of charge to all users. DSO Replay is an online service available at dso.org/replay.

The decision comes as the DSO has been forced to cancel live concerts and events following recommendations from government and public health officials about curbing the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

DSO Replay includes archived Live from Orchestra Hall webcasts of Classical Series performances, recorded in High Definition during DSO concerts. The service also includes the Classroom Edition expansion, which webcasts the DSO’s Educational Concert Series performances designed for schoolchildren.

Classroom Edition video content is supplemented by free music education resources to help parents, tutors, and teachers expand conversations with students beyond the webcasts themselves.

DSO Replay is offered as a benefit for those who donate $50 per year or more to the DSO’s Annual Fund. The fee has been waived during the current coronavirus outbreak as a way of sharing the transformative power of music in a period of public health concern.

The DSO also plans to introduce web-based “live” concert experiences featuring DSO Replay content streamed live on social media; fans will be able to comment and interact during the stream, and several DSO musicians have expressed interest in “hosting” streaming events.

Anyone can use DSO Replay as a guest user without creating an account. However, creating a free account unlocks features like Continue Watching (which automatically picks up videos where they were paused/completed when a session ends) and My Lists (which allows users to create playlists).
