Excelcia Music Publishing was chosen to provide new musical pieces for the revamped sight-reading portion of the Florida Bandmasters Association’s (FBA) annual Music Performance Assessment (MPA).

The FBA’s newly-developed sight-reading process aims to make the assessment more equitable for all bands in Florida. In partnership with the FBA Sight-reading Music Committee, Excelcia Music Publishing helped to create a new rubric for each of the sight-reading difficulty levels so that bands are playing pieces at the appropriate level, and, because the pieces are all brand new, no director will know or see the pieces prior to the sight read.

“This is a real game changer. The days of those old, small, and hard to read sight-reading ‘exercises’ are over. This is a new model for sight-reading assessment and we are thrilled to be working with the FBA on it,” says Larry Clark, president of Excelcia Music Publishing. “With our new booklets, not only will the students get to sight read from actual musical pieces, they will be reading from clear and beautifully engraved music that has never before been seen by anyone in the general public.”

Excelcia Music Publishing will provide the FBA with 12 newly-composed, musical pieces at various grade levels, along with specially-printed scores and part booklets that will be far easier for bands to use and for adjudicators to administer. After the sight-reading assessment, the musical pieces will be released to the general public in late spring.

“We are extremely excited about our new sight-reading model,” says Zach Murdock, FBA Sight Reading Committee chairman. “We think the ensembles and adjudicators will love it too. Larry Clark and Excelcia Music Publishing are the perfect partners on this.”
