The Heritage Encyclopedia of Band Music is now available online. This online version is constantly being updated and is completely searchable: Need an arrangement of “Pomp and Circumstance” for graduation? Choose from the 37 different arrangements listed! Looking for a tune for a Thanksgiving concert? The Encyclopedia lists 30 different selections! Looking for a tune by a composer named Williams? The Encyclopedia lists 82 composers with that name.
The Encyclopedia lists 24,000 different composers, 176,000 different works, and program notes for 2,150 different pieces. The majority of the composer’s listings include a biography, with birth and death dates. Works listings include all known versions and arrangements, including publisher, arranger, and date of publication.
For example: “Stars and Stripes Forever” (Sousa) 36 arrangements; “The Star Spangled Banner” (Smith) 75 arrangements; Selections from Star Wars (Williams) 54 arrangements; Marches by Sousa 137 different marches listed with all known arrangements and program notes for many of them. The author, William H. Rehrig, is currently working on an update, which will be integrated with the online data. The original 2-volume green hardback version of the Encyclopedia sold for $90 in 1990. The online version, greatly expanded from that original publication, is available on an annual subscription basis: $9.95 for an individual and $49.95 for a library or institution. That subscription allows the subscriber to issue 50 passwords for students to have their own password to the site for one month.
