Interpreting Music with Conviction

If you have ever asked yourself, “Do my students sound as good as they could?” then you are not alone! After selecting level-appropriate music that pushes your ensemble slightly beyond its comfort zone, it is time to ask, “Now what?” Demonstration is better than explanation; your ensemble needs to hear lively articulations and vivid dynamic shadings from great musicians in order to internalize and imitate them. In the absence of great modeling, students will imitate each other, and in our quest to never settle for less than our best sound during rehearsal, you can supplement their instruction by playing good recordings of their music or demonstrating those concepts on your own instrument.
