Mike Lawson • Instruments & Gear • February 23, 2021

Anyone who’s attended a Jake Shimabukuro concert or workshop knows how amiable and charismatic he is, not to mention what a remarkable ukulele player he is! With all of these abilities, it’s no wonder he’s great with kids, too. Hal Leonard is publishing his new video book Ukulele for Young Beginners: Easy Lessons for Kids designed to inspire and excite kids with their first step into a lifetime of making music.

The books can be used by families or in a classroom setting. Each chapter includes a video lesson by Jake that’s accessed online for download or streaming where he provides age-appropriate instruction. The full-color book 9-inch x 6-inch book includes simple lessons with fretboard photos and fun supplemental activities to reinforce what the kids are learning from the videos. By the end of the book, the kids will be able to sing and strum familiar folk songs, ensuring that their first lessons with music are successful and rewarding. The songs include optional teacher chord frames so an adult can play along with the student making them sound even more professional.

Jake Shimabukuro is a ukulele virtuoso and composer known for his creative arrangements of pop and rock songs along with his classical and jazz performances. He’s recorded many albums, toured the world, and is the author of Jake Shimabukuro Teaches Ukulele Lessons, also published by Hal Leonard. His YouTube channel has nearly 96,000 subscribers and the video of his version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was one of the first viral videos on YouTube with over 17 million views to date.

Ukulele for Young Beginners: Easy Lessons for Kids is available from Hal Leonard and retails for only $9.99 or $7.99 as a Digital Book. halleonard.com
