The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is a top-ranked creative and performing arts conservatory in Winston-Salem, N.C. Founded in 1963, UNCSA is America’s first public arts conservatory and the only school in the U.S. composed of five arts conservatories on one campus: Dance, Drama, Design & Production, Filmmaking and Music. UNCSA trains students at the high school, undergraduate and master’s levels for professional careers in the arts.
The School of Music offers a transformative conservatory experience that combines intensive individual study under artist mentors with a rich variety of performance opportunities — more than 200 recitals, concerts and operas each year, including collaborations with other UNCSA arts schools in our state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to our competitive music school undergraduate and graduate programs, we’re proud to offer one of the nation’s only four-year residential high school programs. The School of Music is also home to the renowned A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute, a tuition-free graduate-level professional training ground for exceptional young vocalists.
UNCSA is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a progressive Southern city with a vibrant downtown renaissance and the recipient of many “Best Place to Live” honors. As home to the first Arts Council in the US, Winston Salem paved the way for public-private support of the arts and created the model for Arts Councils nationwide. The city’s numerous galleries, performing arts groups, theaters, collectives and collections continue to attract and appeal to arts lovers worldwide.
