Music & the Art of Foley: Universal Orlando

Mike Lawson • ChoralNews • November 23, 2014

Universal Studios Resort Youth Program has designed a new professional audio production experience that reinforces national music education standards by putting the students to work in a recording studio environment doing sound-for-picture music production. In partnership with composer and music educator Robert W. Smith, Universal has created an educational program that allows bands and choirs to produce an audio score, sound effects, and voice overs for a motion picture complete with their names in the film credits.

The school music program director receives a link to download the final cut of the film used in the production with the band or choral performance. Participation in this program allows students a hands-on experience in a professional recording studio with audio engineers, producers, and conductors performing a score to a film, teaching them to create acoustic sound effects and actually put them into a film production. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of the use of digital sound effects in today’s film production while learning about careers in the music and film industries. This workshop meets all nine of the National Association for Music Education benchmarks. universalorlandoyouth.com
