One-Minute Theory One-Minute Sight Singing from Kjos

One-Minute Theory for the Choral Classroom by Ronald Slabbinck and Holly Shaw-Slabbinck teaches the essentials of music theory without cutting into valuable rehearsal time. The curriculum, structured as a collection of one-minute lessons, is designed to target issues of music literacy specific to the choral classroom. The series provides simple assessment through the use of the Test Bank. The student edition provides self-explanatory lessons, but can also be used as a great jumping-off point for teaching theory in the context of performance.

One-Minute Sight Singing teaches and reinforces the essentials of solfege-based sight singing. The curriculum, structured as a collection of one-minute lessons, targets students of all ages who are new to sight singing. It also serves as a component to the regular choral warm-up routine for singers of all experience levels. The progression of lessons helps singers gain a solid mastery of sight singing, movable “Do” solfege, and Curwen hand symbols.

Hey Mom! Listen to This! from Hal Leonard

Hey Mom! Listen to This!, by Elaine Schmidt, is a guide for parents as they enrich their child’s life with music. Starting with early-childhood Kindermusik, the book covers everything from strings, winds, and choral music to piano, guitar, drums, and ethnic instruments, presenting parents with information and options for renting or buying an instrument, selecting a private teacher, and finding performing ensembles for their child. The book continues past a child’s high school graduation, with suggestions for continued musical experience for those not pursuing a music degree as well as educational and career options for those interested in making their living in music. Written in a conversational style, with comments from professional musicians and music teachers, the guide presents musical options available to parents and their children at every stage of their education, offering specific information on such topics as keeping children motivated to practice and helping them deal with performance nerves.
