Read More...What is believed to be the earliest known practical example of polyphonic music –a piece of choral music written for more than one part – has been found in London in a British Library manuscript. The inscription is believed to date back to the start of the 10th century. It is written using an early form of notation that predates the invention of the stave. It was inked into a space at the end of a manuscript of the Life of Bishop Maternianus of Reims.
Read More...The Norman High School Band was heading to a state regional marching contest when one of our charter buses caught fire about 30 miles from our destination. Fortunately, nobody was hurt. We safely removed all of the students from the bus and within minutes it was burned to the ground. The students voted that the show would go on, and chose to perform without uniforms, using borrowed instruments. In spite of this tragedy, the band performed and received superior ratings. We saved a hubcap from the bus and it is now mounted in the band building. It serves as a reminder that a bad situation turned good and that our band family persevered.

Read More...On November 9th, the Berliner Philharmoniker gave a memorial concert to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall precisely 25 years ago. In remembrance of the victims of the Wall, the orchestra, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, performed Karol Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater followed by Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Berliner Philharmonie. Digital microphones from Sennheiser and Neumann were used to record this special event in the highest audio quality for subsequent processing in 3D sound.

Also on the program are Berlioz’s Le Corsaire Overture, inspired by pirate novels and the turquoise Mediterranean waters in Nice, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s ever-popular Scheherazade, a musical depiction of the Thousand and One nights.
